Why is the boreal forest breathing CO2 more deeply?

2013-08-09 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Scientific American: The boreal forest seems to like the higher levels of carbon dioxide that result from fossil-fuel burning. All that carbon appears to be enabling growth rates not seen in human history for the northernmost forest, according to a new study. "Boreal forests are more active than 50 years ago," says geochemist Heather Graven of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, lead author of the new analysis, published online August 8 in Science. She and her colleagues documented a dramatic uptick in the flow...

Swinging CO2 Levels Show The Earth Is 'Breathing' More Deeply

2013-08-08 12:05:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

National Public Radio: Plants accumulate carbon in the spring and summer, and they release it back into the atmosphere in the fall in winter. And a change in the landscape of the Arctic tundra, seen here, means that shrubs hold onto snow better, which keeps the organic-rich soils warmer and more likely to release carbon dioxide that's stored there. Plant life on our planet soaks up a fair amount of the carbon dioxide that pours out of our tailpipes and smokestacks. Plants take it up during the summer and return some...

New NIST Test for Firefighter Breathing Equipment Goes into Effect Sept. 1

2013-06-25 06:00:00| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today

As of September 1, 2013, standard firefighter breathing equipment cannot be certified to NFPA standards unless facepiece lenses pass test developed by NIST. Said test is designed to reduce degradation and possible failure of facepiece lens in SCBA under high-heat firefighting conditions. Incorporated within 2013 update of its standard for SCBA units, new Elevated Temperature Heat and Flame Resistance Test exposes SCBA to 500°F for 5 min in oven followed by 10 sec of direct flame contact.
