Verizon is moving ahead with plans to incorporate 100G optical technology into its U.S. metro network, naming Ciena and Cisco as its packet optical network system suppliers. Set on improving the scalability and efficiency of its metro network, the deployment is part of a broader initiative it is taking to modernize its metro optical network, by replacing legacy TDM-based infrastructure with packet-based optical transport capabilities.

TeliaSonera International Carrier, the international wholesale fiber network operator within TeliaSonera Group, is poised to make a major decision about 100G technology to be used in some of its metro networks, a TSIC executive tells Light Reading. TeliaSonera International Carrier , which has more than 200 PoPs around the world, is evaluating the latest round of metro 100G platforms to emerge from vendors, and is likely to make a deployment decision in the next few months, says Mattias Fridstrom, vice president of technology at TSIC.

TE Connectivity , a world leader in connectivity, announced today a plan to create a standard for a new 100Gb/s form factor pluggable interconnect with the functionality of QSFP28 in a thermally enhanced package approximately the size of the SFP form factor by way of a new MSA group. 'Customers are looking for a smaller form factor that will offer increased faceplate density and higher aggregate bandwidth, while still maintaining superior thermal performance,' reports Nathan Tracy, technologist, TE Data Communications.
