Sri Lanka eyes apparel export boost from EU GSP+

Executives within Sri Lanka's apparel sector predict exporters can generate an additional US$400m to US$500m in annual sales thanks to the country regaining the Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) trade concession with the European Union (EU).

Sri Lanka saw its textile and garment exports slide in the first four months of the year as a result of the seasonal buying patterns of its export countries, which were lower earlier in the year, but saw a moderate increase for the month of April.

SRI LANKA - A severe drought followed by heavy rainfalls in Sri Lanka has hit large swaths of cropping areas, threatening the food security of some 900,000 people, according to a report published yesterday (22 June) by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

Apparel exports from Sri Lanka have clearly declined in the first months of 2017 to both EU and US markets. Shipments have however recovered in April, ahead of the implementation of a restored duty-free access to the EU's territory for most clothing categories under the GSP-Plus regime. Detailed EU and US import data per category of products over 1st half 2016 are also available.
