Verizon deadlocked with unions have upper hand in negotiations

Verizon Communications Inc., deadlocked in labor talks over pension benefits and health care that caused a strike in 2011, has gained bargaining power this time around after shedding operations that employ older unionized workers. The Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, representing about 39,000 Verizon employees, are in the weakest position they've ever been.

Members of the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers will continue working without a contract for Verizon Communications after they failed to reach agreement on a deal for about 37,000 workers by this weekend's deadline. These workers are on the East Coast, from the mid-Atlantic into the Northeast , the Wall Street Journal explained, and largely work as wireline technicians and call center staff; that is, internet, telephone, and television services.

CWA, IBEW unions nearing strike with Verizon

Verizon and wireline workers represented by the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers are at an impasse in labor negotiations, with local members in the process of conducting a strike authorization vote. CWA said in a regional bargaining report that it wants to send Verizon a "strong message that we will do whatever it takes to achieve a fair and just contract."
