The Democratic Alliance on Monday said it had laid a criminal charge against real estate agent and party member Penny Sparrow for racial slurs made online. Sparrow - formerly employed as an agent for Jawitz Properties in KwaZulu-Natal and a card-holding member of the DA - on Sunday referred to black South Africans as "monkeys" who, if allowed loose, would cause "huge dirt and troubles and discomfort to others".

San Bruno: PG&E will escape half of potential $1.13 billion fine in criminal trial

A federal judge has slashed the maximum fine that PG&E faces in a federal criminal trial stemming from a fatal explosion in San Bruno, ruling that instead of paying up to $1.13 billion if convicted, the utility giant won't have to pay more than $562 million. In a ruling on Dec. 8, the judge ordered that PG&E can escape paying $565 million in fines as punishment over allegations that the company was criminally responsible for causing the blast of natural gas that killed eight residents of a quiet San Bruno neighborhood in September 2010.
