EcoWatch: The recent rash of deadly wildfires and record breaking high temperatures across the western U.S. indicates the country may be in the grips of an "angry summer" made worse by climate change. July 2013 began with much of the western portion of the U.S. experiencing one of the most extreme heat waves on record in the region. During the days between June 24 and 29, there were 46 monthly high-temperature records set or tied in the U.S., along with 21 records for the highest overnight minimum temperature....

A flashlight that ditches the batteries in favor of body heat is one of the finalists in Google's 2013 Science Fair. Ann Makosinski, 15-year-old Canadian student, created the device, which harvests energy from the human hand to power itself. Makosinski created a prototype using Petier tiles she bought on eBay, which produce electricity when one side is heated and the other cool.

USA Today: High temperatures brought sweaty discomfort to much of the Southwest on Sunday with no break in the sizzling temperatures likely until Tuesday. The thermometer reached 117 in Las Vegas. Triple-digit temperatures were recorded n the valleys and desert regions of Southern California, while metropolitan Phoenix saw just a slight drop in temperatures after experiencing record-breaking heat a day earlier. In Pasadena, Calif., six half-marathon runners were hospitalized Sunday for heat-related illnesses....
