Massive heat dome to scorch the Southwest, could smash longstanding records

2016-06-15 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Mashable: An unusually severe heat wave is projected to roast the Southwest beginning late this week and lasting into next. At the peak of the heat, Phoenix may come close to its all-time record high temperature of 122 degrees Fahrenheit, with extraordinary heat in Las Vegas and Death Valley, California as well. Even Los Angeles could hit 100 degrees on Sunday and Monday. The heat wave will come courtesy of a huge bulge, or ridge, in the jet stream that is going to set up across the South Central U.S....

Southwest braces for record heat: Is it climate change?

2016-06-15 11:57:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Christian Science Monitor: The National Weather Service has issued an 'excessive heat watch' predicting record-breaking temperatures this weekend in the Southwest, a region already beleaguered by wildfire and drought. Track meets were moved to the evenings to avoid the soaring temperatures. Marching band members ditched their formal hats and uniforms. Forecasters took to the airwaves to warn viewers, especially the elderly and infirm, to stay indoors and stay hydrated. Temperatures soared over 110 degree F., in several...

Greenland ice melt goes into overdrive after record heat wave

2016-06-14 15:06:44| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Mashable: In 2016, Greenland has seemingly been on a mission to prove that it, too, can experience truly warm weather of the sort that is typically confined to far more temperate areas. So far in June, the world's largest island has experienced record warmth that would be considered mild even in the lower 48 states. Take June 9, for example. That day it was warmer in Greenland's capital of Nuuk -- at 75 degrees Fahrenheit, or 24 degrees Celsius, than it was in New York City, which had a high temperature...

Climate change likely to turn up heat on koalas

2016-06-08 12:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Phys.Org: A changing climate means that by 2070 koalas may no longer call large parts of inland Australia home, researchers have found. Using a detailed ecological model, the University of Melbourne study shows hotter temperatures and altered rainfall patterns will make it much more difficult for koalas to get the water they need - making inland populations vulnerable to heat-stress. The researchers mapped potential koala habitats in 2070 by using information about koala behaviour, physiology, body size,...
