A lawsuit claiming the state breached its duties to protect public lands used for the Army's Pohakuloa Training Area will go to trial this week. Filed by Big Island residents Clarence Ching and Mary Kahaulelio, the suit says the Department of Land and Natural Resources failed to ensure that munitions are cleaned up after military exercises as the Army's existing 65-year lease for the lands between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa requires.

Santa Barbara County Employees File Class Action Lawsuit Against Vons

A class action lawsuit was filed this week on behalf of hourly Vons employees, alleging the grocery chain failed to pay overtime wages or allow employees to break for lunch, among other unfair business practices. Santa Barbara law firm Anticouni & Associates filed the lawsuit Thursday in Santa Barbara County Superior Court against Safeway Inc., which owns Vons.

Two environmental groups say they plan to sue over a Yorktown terminal that accepts trains carrying volatile crude oil from North Dakota's Bakken shale region. Media outlets report that the Center for Biological Diversity and the Sierra Club's Virginia chapter said Thursday they have given a 60-day notice of their plans to sue the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers over the terminal's permit.
