Global warming will bring more U.S. lightning strikes

2014-11-14 15:50:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

LiveScience: A 50 percent increase in the number of lightning strikes within the United States can be expected by 2100 if temperatures continue to rise due to greenhouse gas emissions, a new study claims. Researchers found a 12 percent increase in lightning activity for every 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) of warming in the atmosphere, according to the study, published on Nov. 13 in the journal Science. Without emissions cuts, scientists expect this century to end with global temperatures that are...

Times of India: Ferocious lightning strikes are all set to increase globally, thanks to warming temperatures. New climate models have predicted a 50% increase in lightning strikes across the world during this century as a result of warming temperatures associated with climate change. University of California, Berkeley's climate scientist David Romps and his colleagues looked at predictions of precipitation and cloud buoyancy in 11 different climate models and conclude that their combined effect will generate...

Warming world means a hike in US lightning strikes

2014-11-13 20:18:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

New Scientist: Golfers beware. Expect more lightning bolts as the world warms up. We already know that climate change is increasing the likelihood of storms, tornadoes and heatwaves. Now, a model of how climate change will affect lightning patterns in the US predicts that for every 1°C of global warming, lightning strikes will increase by 12 per cent. Currently, there are about 25 million lightning strikes each year in the US. These ignite half of the wildfires that break out and kill approximately 100 people...
