Reuters: The United States and Brazil pledged on Tuesday to increase their share of renewable energy in electricity generation from sources other than hydro-power to 20 percent by 2030 in an effort to show commitment to fighting climate change. EU to curb pollution from mid-sized power plants
2015-06-30 16:42:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: EU member states on Tuesday agreed new rules to limit pollution from hundreds of thousands of medium-sized power plants that had previously escaped regulation. The compromise deal to curb sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and dust from combustion plants with a thermal input rated between one and 50 megawatts now requires just a formal sign-off from the European Parliament, expected later this year. Environmental campaigners said the draft rules had been weakened significantly during negotiations so...

Supreme Court ruling is far from a death sentence for Obama's Clean Power Plant rules

Newsweek: The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday ruled 5-4 that when the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) made its first-ever rule limiting toxic air pollution like mercury from power plants, it failed to adequately take into account the costs of reducing emissions early enough in the rule-making process. Stock of Peabody Energy, a major coal company (and one of the many petitioners in the case), shot up Monday morning shortly after the ruling, and news articles said the court decision threw out and struck...
US Supreme Court blocks air pollution rules for power plants
2015-06-30 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
LA Times: The Supreme Court has blocked Obama administration rules designed to sharply limit the hazardous air pollutants that spew from the nation's power plants. The justices by a 5-4 vote agreed with the coal industry and Republican-led states that said the forced cutbacks were too costly and could lead to power outages. Justice Antonin Scalia, speaking for the majority, said it was not reasonable for the Environmental Protection Agency to proceed with the new rules without weighing their cost, estimated...
