UFCW members vote 97 per cent in favour of strike action at Loblaws in Ontario

The United Food and Commercial Workers union says its members working at Loblaw Companies Ltd. in Ontario have voted 97 per cent in favour of strike action. The two UFCW locals represent 28,000 grocery workers employed at Loblaws Great Food and Superstore, Zehrs, Zehrs Great Food and Superstore, and Fortinos.
George Weston gets bump from Loblaw's acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart

George Weston Ltd. says the addition of Shoppers Drug Mart to its Loblaw retailing business helped push up the company's first-quarter revenue by 36.7 per cent to $10.41 billion. George Weston's profit also rose sharply, with net income rising 39.2 per cent to $167 million or $1.23 per share.

Loblaws mulling purchase of some Target locations after strong quarter

Loblaw Companies Ltd. is considering taking over some of the Target locations in Canada soon to be vacated by the U.S. retailer, but says the number will not be "significant or material" to its overall growth strategy. "The network of stores has been out and on the market for many, many years in one way, shape or form," Loblaw president and executive chairman Galen G. Weston told analysts in a call Thursday.
