Facebook updates Portal smart display, adds TV box for video calls

(Telecompaper) Facebook has updated its Portal smart display for video calls, first launched a year ago. The new range includes a mini version of the display and a TV set-top box, to turn the TV set into a home for video calls. In addition, the company is expanding sales of the devices beyond North America, to the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Australia and New Zealand.

(Telecompaper) Last week, Naspers listed its consumer internet unit Prosus in Amsterdam. Walt Disney unexpectedly launched its much anticipated Disney+ service in a single country, the Netherlands, for a free trial until the official launch date in November. Naspers, as a result of the partial spin-off of Prosus, lost 30 percent in week 37. Other than that, IAC was the biggest loser, down 7.1 percent. The winners included Salem Media (+22%), comScore (+16%) and ProSieben (+15%). Our Global Media index was up 0.5 percent for the week, against a gain of 1.0 percent for the S&P 500 index.

US states attorneys to launch Facebook and Google antitrust probes

(Telecompaper) Top state law-enforcement officials across the United States are formally opening antitrust investigations into Facebook and Alphabet's Google, confirming recent reports. New York's attorney general Letitia James said her office is organising a bipartisan, multistate antitrust probe into whether Facebook stifled competition and put users at risk. Separately, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's office said it was launching a probe of "large tech companies" without yet naming them.
