North Carolina auto sales rev up 13% in 1Q

Auto sales in North Carolina jumped 13 percent in the first quarter 2015 compared to the year prior, outpacing the national average and giving a boost to local car and truck dealers. Much of the auto sales growth across the state was among Toyota , Chrysler and Nissan dealers, which were up 19 percent, 16 percent and 12 percent respectively among the major auto makers in the first three months of the year, according to a report from the North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association.

Duke Energy Corp. says a $25 million fine by North Carolina environmental regulators over coal ash pollution that has been seeping into groundwater for years is excessive and unnecessary. The country's largest electric company said Thursday it appealed the penalty announced last month over ongoing contamination at the retired Sutton electric plant outside Wilmington.

Duke Energy could legally leak pollutants from some of its coal ash dumps under new wastewater permits proposed Friday by North Carolina regulators. Just days after federal prosecutors filed criminal charges against Duke over the leaks, the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources released new draft permits for three of Duke's coal ash sites.

North Carolina Medicaid claims lawsuit to face biggest hearing

A case that pits almost every Medicaid provider in North Carolina against the state government and its IT contractor will have arguably its most important hearing to date in April. The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services and the vendor it contracted with to build NCTracks, the Medicaid claims payment system, are facing a lawsuit that could incorporate 70,000 health care providers and finish with damages exceeding $100 million.
