Authorities are continuing to investigate a rail fuel spill caused by somebody placing a piece of railroad track that punctured a moving locomotive fuel tank in downtown Bend. Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas says the railroad company is now treating the Tuesday incident as a case of local vandalism and trespassing - though it's not ruling out sabotage.

Spending increased 7 percent at the state's public authorities over the past year as the shadowy government agencies faced new problems and higher debt, a report from state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli today found. Spending at the state's more than 1,100 public authorities, including the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Thruway Authority, jumped $3.5 billion between 2013 and this year, DiNapoli said, reaching nearly $60 billion in spending.

Authorities are investigating four drug overdoses, at least one involving heroin, among employees at George's chicken slaughtering and processing plant in Edinburg on Thursday afternoon and early Friday morning. Shenandoah County Sheriff Timothy C. Carter said the overdoses were reported in two distinct incidents, one involving three victims and another with a single victim.

Authorities investigate 2 Harris Teeter armed robberies

Authorities are investigating armed robberies at two Cabarrus County Harris Teeters in the past month, according to a news release from investigators. The first robbery happened at the Poplar Tent Road store at about 11 p.m. on Oct. 12 , and the second was at the Brookdale Drive location that happened Saturday at about 9:30 p.m. A Charlotte and Concord Harris Teeter The Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office and the Concord Police Department are investigating the armed robberies.
