Estimating the Cost of Mortality Management

2013-01-15 16:09:00| National Hog Farmer

Research at Michigan State University estimated the costs of two animal composting systems and compared them to routine methods of managing mortalities. By Joe Vansickle, Senior Editor The practice of composting to manage on-farm swine mortalities has increased from 10.5% in 1994 to nearly 36% in 2006, according to data supplied by USDAs Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Traditionally, the most popular method of composting has been the open static pile (OSP) in bins, piles or windrows, managed by primary, secondary and curing stages. More recently, in-vessel (IV) systems have become increasingly used. The most popular system is rotating drums. read more

United Kingdom: Will connecting offshore wind to the grid really cost 17bn?

2013-01-15 12:44:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: A release from the reputable House of Commons Public Accounts Committee reported in almost every newspaper this week claimed it was 17bn. That, the Telegraph calculated, adds up to 35 a year on household bills who are helping to pay for a 10-11% return on investment for those lucky enough to own an offshore wind power line. Is it true? 1) It's not 35 - it's about 9.80 per household It's not hard to work out how the Telegraph got to it's 35 figure. Take 17bn, divide it by the number of...

Plan to link offshore windfarms to grid could cost 17bn

2013-01-14 01:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: The government's plans to bring more offshore wind power on to the grid are flawed and could lead to higher electricity prices for consumers, an influential committee of MPs has warned. Offshore windfarms require heavy-duty transmission infrastructure to carry the power to land, and the provision of the cables needed has been a serious obstacle to the growth of the wind industry, as windfarms both on and offshore have had to wait for long periods to be connected. Under the government's current...

Fiddling while Rome burns the 3trn cost of climate delay change delay

2013-01-13 21:57:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Independent: The Doha climate summit agreement which delayed vital action to tackle global warming for another seven years will cost $5 trillion (3.1trn) to remedy, according to research by one of the world's leading climate change scientists. Delaying until 2020 measures to cut carbon dioxide emissions enough to give the world a fair chance of containing global warming would cost 25 per cent more than taking action to achieve the same reduction now, according to the first research to quantify the financial...

The unaffordable cost of climate change delay

2013-01-13 21:48:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Independent: If there was ever a case of fiddling while Rome burns, then the sadly dilatory global response to the threat from climate change is surely it. Even as weather patterns become measurably more extreme the world over; even as the polar ice caps melt back ever further each summer, opening up newly navigable shipping lanes; even as average global temperatures continue their inexorable rise; still, attempts to forge an international consensus make only glacially slow progress. Yet as research published...
