The Guyana sugar industry: The point of no return

Alarmed at the crisis state of the sugar industry in 2011, I devoted more than a score of Sunday columns in that year (May 29 to October 16) to its discussion and drew attention to the crying need for radical reform and restructuring. A year later, in 2012, the situation had worsened and my alarm had grown considerably. I therefore decided to re-visit some of the issues in the industry raised in my 2011 columns. This was accomplished in an additional dozen Sunday columns in that year (September 2 to December 23). At this point of time (the beginning of 2014), I am now more than ever convinced that the crisis in the sugar industry has passed its tipping-point or point of no return. This means that all hopes for a rational, considered and ordered reform and reconstruction of the industry are lost.

3 months after sugar industry meltdown, still no word on when production will resume

Today representatives of the eighteen branches of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association met in Orange Walk. The only item on the agenda for today\'s session was a look at the letter sent by B.S.I. on December thirty-first and the formulation of a response. The response will be to invite BSI back to the table, hopefully by Monday and, very importantly, to assure the Prime Minister\'s intercession in getting B.S.I. to commit in black and white. Currently BSCFA\'s attorneys are working on a Memorandum of Understanding which should, ideally, be signed by B.S.I., BSCFA and G.O.B. The reality is that the impasse remains, and both sides seem unable to meet.
Cabinet nod for sugar industry bailout package likely before Christmas

The Food Ministry is making efforts to seek before Christmas the Union Cabinet\'s nod for the bailout package for the sugar industry that includes a Rs. 7200-crore interest-free loan.
