Phosphorus, potassium nutrient recommendations revised
2013-10-10 20:43:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Source: Iowa State University Advances in soil-testing research have led Iowa State University Extension and Outreach agronomists to revise recommendations for phosphorus, potassium and lime. Field research is conducted continuously to assure that nutrient management suggestions are up to date, says Antonio Mallarino, an extension agronomist and professor of agronomy. read more

New technology detects in-season nutrient deficiencies earlier than tissue tests
2013-09-26 16:00:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Fine-tune your plant nutrition Jim Goss isnt ready to declare tissue tests obsolete. But if field trials of a new resin-based technology continue to pan out, he thinks he may have found a new early warning system to detect unexpected nutrient deficiencies early enough to prevent yield losses. read more

Farmers reduce sediment, nutrient runoff with conservation efforts
2013-08-27 22:30:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Source: USDA A USDA assessment shows benefits of farmer-led conservation efforts to reducing runoff, Agriculture Secretary highlights the need for conservation programs provided by a Food, Farm and Jobs Bill A new report, released by USDA's NRCS this week, marks the completion of a watershed-wide assessment of conservation efforts in the Mississippi River watershed. Its findings demonstrate that conservation work, like controlling erosion and managing nutrients, has reduced the edge-of-field losses of sediment by 35%, nitrogen by 21% and phosphorous by 52%. read more

Striped Corn Leaves Could Mean Nutrient Deficiencies
2013-06-24 20:07:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
By Jim Camberato, Purdue University Interveinal chlorosis of corn leaf tissue (striped corn) occurs to some extent every growing season. Several nutrient deficiencies result in similar striped corn symptoms that can be very difficult to distinguish, including deficiencies in sulfur, zinc and magnesium. Plant sampling and tissue analysis should be conducted to diagnose if corn leaf striping is due to a particular nutrient deficiency or multiple nutrient deficiencies or another factor unrelated to plant nutrition. read more
