Appalachian Power closes 3 West Virginia coal-fired plants

Appalachian Power's Kanawha River Power Station at Glasgow, the Kammer Power Station near Moundsville and the Phillip Sporn Power Station at New Haven were closed Sunday. Appalachian Power had announced in 2011 that it planned to close the plants, along with three coal-fired plants in Virginia, Ohio and Indiana.

Cold Ups Demand to Unofficial Record for Appalachian Power

Customers of Appalachian Power set an unofficial record for peak demand as they turned up the heat during Friday's deep freeze. The utility's customers in West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee pushed electricity demand to 8,697 megawatts.

CSX makes $25,000 gift to Rahall Appalachian Transportation Institute

CSX Corporation presented a gift of $25,000 to the Rahall Appalachian Transportation Institute, a National University Transportation Center based at Marshall University, in a ceremony Friday, Jan. 16. The presentation took place in the office of Interim MU President Gary White in Old Main on the Huntington campus. The gift increased the total amount of donations from CSX to Marshall to more than $814,000 since 1984, according to Dr. Ron Area, CEO of the Marshall University Foundation Inc. "The Rahall Transportation Institute has become a great partner with CSX," Cheetham said.

An Appalachian Songbook' at WCU

"An Appalachian Songbook: North Carolina in Word, Music and Song" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, in the recital hall of the Coulter Building on the Western Carolina University campus. The event is open to the public free of charge.
