US Bishops' Comms Chair Welcomes Government Takeover of Internet

The chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Communications Committee has welcomed the vote by the Federal Communications Commission to allow the government to take control over the Internet. According to a press release on the USCCB website, the move for the government to regulate the Internet is "crucial for allowing religions, including the Catholic Church, to communicate online," and will serve in "preserving service providers from discriminating against content makers."

Optos agrees A 259m takeover by Nikon

Fife-based eye specialist Optos has agreed to be taken over by the Japanese group Nikon Corporation, in a deal which values the company at A 259m. The Dunfermline-based firm described the deal as "fair and reasonable" and said it would help transform it into a "global medical business".

Goodman Fielder approves $1.3b takeover

Shareholders of Australia's largest listed food manufacturer Goodman Fielder have voted in favour of a $1.3 billion takeover offer from Singapore oils trader Wilmar International and Hong Kong investment company First Pacific. More than 99 per cent of votes were cast in favour of the 67.5-a-share offer on Thursday in Sydney, while just over 80 per cent of shareholders approved overall.
