Sen. Charles Schumer is calling for daily federal screening of airport and airline workers for weapons following last month's arrests of five men accused of smuggling guns through the New York and Atlanta airports. The New York Democrat, joined by Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson, is asking the Transportation Security Administration to immediately require all U.S. airports to screen staff when they start work.

On Dec. 10, while 1.7 million other passengers were being routinely screened for weapons at security checkpoints in airports around the country, the authorities say that a man carrying a backpack containing 16 firearms with ammunition flew aboard a Delta Air Lines passenger jet to Kennedy International Airport in New York from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Atlanta baggage handler charged with helping smuggle guns onto flight

ROUGH CUT STORY: A Delta Air Lines baggage handler has been charged on Tuesday with helping another man smuggle 18 handguns onto a flight from Atlanta to New York City, in a scheme that prosecutors said ran for years and also involved assault weapons. Eugene Harvey, 31, has been charged with helping a former Delta employee, Mark Quentin Henry, avoid detection of the guns by airport security on Dec. 10 before Henry boarded a passenger jet with the firearms in a carry-on bag, court records show.
