United Kingdom: Tree planting 'can reduce flooding'

2016-03-11 04:48:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: Planting trees around rivers could reduce the height of flooding in towns by up to 20%, new research suggests. A study for the Environment Agency concludes that trees round a feeder stream can slow the rush of rainwater and save properties from flooding. But it warns that natural flood prevention methods do not always work. And it urges a strategic approach because foresting a whole catchment would be counter-productive. The report - from the universities of Birmingham and Southampton - says...

Guardian: Rising sea levels are putting increasing pressure on US coastal cities, with a new analysis showing that human-driven climate change is to blame for three-quarters of the coastal flooding events over the past decade. The findings are based on a separate study, released on Monday, that found the Earths seas...

Record Missouri flooding was humanmade calamity, scientist says

2016-02-06 02:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ScienceDaily: At the end of December 2015, a huge storm named "Goliath" dumped 9-10 inches of rain in a belt across the central United States, centered just southwest of St. Louis, most of it in a three-day downpour. The rain blanketed the Meramec Basin, an area of 4,000 square miles drained by the Meramec River, which enters the Mississippi River south of St. Louis. The Meramec's response was dramatic. Gauging stations recorded a pulse of water that grew as it traveled down the main stem of the Meramec River,...
