Remote reefs thrive despite climate change

Union-Tribune: As ocean warming continues to trigger widespread destruction of coral reefs, a decade-long study of remote islands in the Central Pacific suggests these biodiversity hotspots may be able to thrive despite the threats posed by an increasingly hotter planet. With many parts of the globe in the grip of a nearly two-year coral reef bleaching event -- fueled in part by El Nio-driven ocean warming -- scientists and marine conservation advocates have feared many reefs could suffer irreparable damage...

Climate change will lead to deformed and virus-hit coral reefs
2016-02-19 20:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Coral will become deformed and increasingly fall victim to outbreaks of herpes-like viruses as humans continue to pump carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, according to two new studies. Combined, the two effects suggest coral reefs will have trouble recovering from bleaching events, like the the world is currently experiencing. When carbon dioxide is emitted from factories, cars and power plants, about 30% of it is absorbed by the ocean. As that happens, the acidity of the oceans increases,...

Tough times for the tree of life on coral reefs
2016-01-12 20:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: Marine scientists are calling for a re-think of how marine protected areas (MPAs) are planned and coordinated, following a global assessment of the conservation of tropical corals and fishes. Researchers from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (Coral CoE), at James Cook University in Townsville, analysed the extent to which the evolutionary histories of corals and fishes are protected, rather than looking at individual species. "Our interest was in evolutionary...
Algae blooms close all Coast beaches, oyster reefs
2015-12-12 02:13:29| Waste Management - Topix.net
Algae blooms in the Mississippi Sound have closed all beaches and oyster reefs in South Mississippi, according to the state departments of Marine Resources and Environmental Quality. MDEQ issued a preemptive closure for all Coast beaches, because of the possibility of respiratory problems and irritations to the eyes, nose, skin and throat.

These Coral Reefs Are Crystal Ball Future Change

Climate Central: Christmas Island sits about as close to the middle of the Pacific as you can get. The main island of Kiribati, a small island nation, is 3,300 miles from San Francisco, 3,800 miles from Brisbane and just 140 miles north of the equator. Its closest neighbor of note is Hawaii, which is still 1,250 miles away. Some might say it's as close to the middle of nowhere as you can get. But it's at the center of one of the biggest climate events in decades. A super El Nio has raised water temperatures to...
