Duke Energy applies for $1.3B in bonds to cut nuke plant closing costs in Florida

Duke Energy has asked Florida regulators to allow it to issue $1.3 billion worth of a new type of securitized bond designed to reduce charges to customers for the costs of shutting down the damaged Crystal River nuclear plant . Duke projects using the securitized bonds approved by the Florida Legislature this year to help address the Crystal River costs will save customers in the state about $790 million over the next 20 years.

House panel calls out nuke officials for repeated failures

Members of a U.S. House panel say they're frustrated with decades of security and safety lapses at the sites that make up the nation's nuclear complex. They called out top officials with the U.S. Energy Department and the National Nuclear Safety Administration during a hearing Friday in Washington, D.C. The panel focused on oversight failures that contributed to a 2014 radiation release that forced the closure of the nation's only underground nuclear waste repository in southern New Mexico.

California backs gas plant to fill void from closed nuke

Utility regulators Thursday opened the way for development of a natural gas-fired power plant on the coast near San Diego, perhaps one of the last of its kind in California as the state pushes toward a green energy future. On a 4-1 vote, the California Public Utilities Commission approved a proposal from San Diego Gas & Electric to buy power from the proposed plant in Carlsbad.

Advocate wants $648M payout for 'inappropriate' nuke talks

Two Southern California utilities should return at least $648 million to customers because of evidence of secret deal-making in a nearly $5 billion settlement following the closing of a nuclear power plant, a state agency said Friday. The Office of Ratepayer Advocates, an arm of the California Public Utilities Commission, said in a statement that private conversations between the commission's then-President Michael Peevey and a Southern California Edison executive gave the company an unfair advantage in negotiations over how to divide costs left behind by the now-defunct San Onofre plant.
