Intel invests in Android drone maker Yuneec

(Telecompaper) Intel announced an investment of over USD 60 million in Chinese drone manufacturer Yuneec. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich announced the deal in a video posted on YouTube. Intel is expected to help develop semiconductors for connecting drones to the internet and communicating with other devices. Started in 1999 making electric and radio-controlled, Yuneec manufactures over 1 million units a year sold under OEM/ODM brands as well as the Typhoon brand of multicopters. It claims to have introduced the world's first ready-to-fly, out-of-the-box drone in 2014. Its Typhoon Q500 hquadcopter includes a "smart transmitter" combining a 2.4GHz radio control transmitter with a 5.8GHz digital video link along with a built-in Android touch screen.

Square's Swedish Rival Gets $67 Million From Intel, Zouk Capital

Swedish payments startup iZettle AB, a rival to Twitter Inc. founder Jack Dorsey's Square Inc., raised 60 million euros to expand in Europe and fund a plan to offer merchants cash advances on future card sales. The company, whose card-deck-sized devices are used by small businesses such as street-market vendors and neighborhood beauticians, completed the funding round led by existing investors Intel Capital and Zouk Capital, according to Jacob de Geer, iZettle's founder and chief executive officer.

Intel chips to help pinpoint cause of bee colonies' deaths

Researchers from Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation want to pinpoint the factors that lead to the mass death of honey bees everywhere, in what's being called as colony collapse disorder. In order to do so, it teamed up with Intel earlier this year to outfit healthy bees with a "backpack" that's a third of their weight.
