Algae blooms in the Mississippi Sound have closed all beaches and oyster reefs in South Mississippi, according to the state departments of Marine Resources and Environmental Quality. Algal Blooms Linked to Largest Die-Off of Great Whales Ever Recorded
2015-10-29 19:38:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
EcoWatch: In Argentina baby whales have been dying off the coast in increasingly high numbers for the past decade and no one has known exactly why. "The average number of right whale deaths per year at Peninsula Valdes jumped more than 10-fold, from fewer than six per year before 2005 to 65 per year from 2005 to 2014," reports National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries West Coast Region. "Even more striking," they say, "90 percent of the deaths from 2005 to 2014 were very young calves...

Harmful Algal Blooms Predicted for Lake Erie, Says NOAA
2015-07-22 17:48:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
EcoWatch: Summer is here and that means its toxic algae season for Lake Erie. Harmful algal blooms have been making the lake green around the gills for the past several years. Last August, the cyanobacteria even contaminated Toledos drinking water, leaving more than 400,000 people high and dry for two days. Scientists from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say this summer will be another doozy. The agencys seasonal forecast predicts that 2015 could be the second-worst year on record after...

Heavier rains mean more toxic blooms for Lake Erie
2015-07-16 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Climate Central: Come September, Lake Erie might face a toxic algae bloom that could rival the record-setting spread of scum that happened in 2011. And such blooms could become more common as the warming climate fuels more downpours that wash bloom-fueling fertilizers into the lake. The forecasts for a severe bloom this year, made in early July by scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and regional partners, was based on the considerable rains that fell in June and washed a large load...
