Wi-Fi Alliance announces HaLow brand for 802.11ah
2016-01-04 16:26:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) The Wi-Fi Alliance announced the Wi-Fi HaLow designation for products incorporating IEEE 802.11ah technology. Wi-Fi HaLow operates in frequency bands below 1 GHz, offering longer range, lower power connectivity to Wi-Fi products. The Wi-Fi alliance said it expects the new standard to support a variety of Internet of Things applications in need of power-efficient connectivity, such as the sensors used for the smart home, digital healthcare, industrial systems and smart city services. Wi-Fi HaLow's range is nearly twice that of current Wi-Fi devices, and it also offers a more robust connection in challenging environments where the signal must penetrate walls and barriers. Many devices that support Wi-Fi HaLow are expected to operate in 2.4 and 5 GHz as well as 900 MHz, allowing devices to connect with the current Wi-Fi ecosystem of more than 6.8 billion installed devices. Dense device deployments will also benefit from Wi-Fi HaLow's ability to connect thousands of devices to a single access point.

Wi-Fi Alliance tries to win consumer support as LTE-U showdown looms
2015-11-05 01:51:26| Wireless - Topix.net
The Wi-Fi Alliance , an industry group that certifies Wi-Fi products for interoperability, has highlighted the importance of the technology to the daily lives of Americans ahead of a testing summit that will try to shed some light on potential conflicts between Wi-Fi and a carrier technology called LTE-U. LTE-U is a technology that some U.S. wireless carriers want to use to take the pressure off their networks - using the same unlicensed spectrum as Wi-Fi networks.

Wi-Fi Alliance reaches for peace over unlicensed LTE
2015-10-09 17:46:14| Wireless - Topix.net
A Wi-Fi Alliance workshop next month could start to lay the groundwork for peace between Wi-Fi and LTE promoters who have been arguing over potential interference. If LTE and Wi-Fi can operate peacefully in unlicensed spectrum, mobile users should be able to get a better experience in in crowded areas whether they are using their carrier's service or a Wi-Fi hotspot.
