Cisco takes aim at security services with new division

Cisco today said it would add a security arm to its existing services division with an eye toward pushing its support of its security products as well as offering a range of managed security services. Bryan Palma, the senior vice president and general manager of the newly created Services Security Practice, said Cisco plans to offer new types of managed security services based on Cisco security products, though he did not provide detail on what that might be specifically and how it would be done.

Webcam Maker Takes FTC's Heat for Internet-of-Things Security Failure

The FTC on Wednesday announced a settlement with Trendnet over its lax security practices. The action stemmed from privacy invasions that occurred in January 2012, when hackers posted live feeds to the Web from nearly 700 cameras made by the company. "Right now, we're doing enforcement, as you can see from the Trendnet case," said FTC spokesperson Peter Kaplan.

Amazon takes aim at security conscious enterprises with new appliance

In a bid to improve data security, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched AWS CloudHSM, which uses a separate appliance to protect cryptographic keys used for encryption. There are already a variety of alternatives for protecting sensitive data on Amazon's cloud. But for some applications and data that are subject to contractual or regulatory mandates for managing cryptographic keys, additional protections may be necessary. Here is where the CloudHSM (Hardware Security Module) fits in, according to Amazon.
