The politics of global development ensures that national self-sufficiency in basic food items is not taken as an important indicator of development. But as a development banker, I understand that there is not a great country that is not able to feed itself or prioritise ability to do so. Of course there are countries which will remain net-importers of food, for whatever reason. Such countries will however remain vulnerable to external food shocks. This can be devastating, as was seen (and thankfully it was to some extent attenuated) during the last global food crisis in 2008, which coincided with the financial market crisis. Indeed the ascension of biblical Joseph as Prime Minister of Egypt was facilitated by his perceived acumen in the design of the ancient Egyptian food policy to ensure internal food security in his host country.
