NGOs fordern griechisches Ja zum Prespa-Park

Anlässlich des heutigen Weltfeuchtgebietstages fordern sieben europäische Naturschutzorganisationen die neue griechische Regierung auf, die Internationale Übereinkunft für den Schutz und die nachhaltige Entwicklung des Prespa-Parks zu ratifizieren und die beiden Prespa-Seen grenzübergreifend zu schützen.Anlässlich des heutigen Weltfeuchtgebietstages fordern sieben europäische Naturschutzorganisationen, darunter EuroNatur, die neue griechische Regierung auf, endlich die Internationale Übereinkunft für den Schutz und die nachhaltige Entwicklung des Prespa-Parks in nationales Recht umzusetzen und damit die Region rund um die beiden Prespa-Seen grenzübergreifend zu schützen. Die Übereinkunft wurde bereits am 2. Februar 2010 von den Umweltministern der drei Anrainerstaaten Albanien, Mazedonien und Griechenland sowie dem damaligen EU-Umwelt-Kommissar unterzeichnet, in der griechischen Gesetzgebung bislang aber nicht in Kraft gesetzt. Das Abkommen ermöglicht es den Verantwortlichen, ihre Aktivitäten zum Schutz der Prespa-Region länderübergreifend durchzuführen und zu koordinieren. Die abwechslungsreiche Seen- und Gebirgslandschaft zählt zu den ökologisch wertvollsten Abschnitten des Grünen Bandes Europa. So brüten hier vom Aussterben bedrohte Vogelarten wie der Krauskopfpelikan noch in großer Zahl und profitieren vom außerordentlichen Fischreichtum der Seen. Doch Überfischung, intensive Bewässerungslandwirtschaft und Überweidung gefährden das einzigartige Naturjuwel. Vom 3. bis 4. Februar kommen Vertreter von EuroNatur, der Frankfurter Zoologischen Gesellschaft, KORA, MES, PPNEA, Plantlife und der SPP im griechischen Prespa-Nationalpark zusammen, um Strategien und wirksame Aktivitäten für den Schutz der Natur- und Kulturschätze der Region zu diskutieren.
