There are plenty of companies that get a substantial chunck of change making serial to USB, Ethernet, Bluetooth, and WiFi converters such as VSCOM, Comtrol, and BrainBoxes. BTW, I just picked up a VSCOM USB-8COMi-RM USB to 8 serial ports; each port is selectable RS-232/RS-422/RS-485.
