American Bazaar: Climate change is no longer speculations and scientific studies. It is a clear and present danger as people across the world are feeling its shattering impacts. There may be a debate over its degree and impacts, but no one can deny it altogether. Rocks record Totten Glacier's rapid retreat history

2016-05-19 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: Unchecked climate change could put Antarctica's huge Totten Glacier into an unstable configuration over the coming centuries, a study has warned. If that happens, the ice loss could push up global oceans by 2m, or more. The claim is based on an assessment of the rocks underlying the ice stream. Scientists tell the journal Nature that should the front of the glacier retreat about 150km from its current position, it will then enter a runaway reversal that takes it 200-250km further inland....

Constant watch on mighty polar glaciers

2016-04-22 12:13:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: The EU's Sentinel satellite system has begun monitoring six mighty polar glaciers in near real-time. The sextet - Pine Island and Thwaites in Antarctica; and Jakobshavn, Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden, Zacharae Isstrom and Petermann in Greenland - are major contributors to ongoing sea-level rise. They are thinning and flowing faster, and scientists believe some of them have become unstable. Routine observation should pick up any sudden changes in behaviour. The data is currently being gathered by the...
