Announcement from Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) Scientific Collaboration confirming detection of gravitational waves was lauded by The Optical Society CEO Elizabeth Rogan. After citing "groundbreaking" work of radio astronomers and 1978 Noble Prize winners Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson’s team at Bell Labs, Rogan congratulated LIGO Scientific Collaboration "on this remarkable achievement of gravitational wave astronomy."
