Nextel carrier NII files for bankruptcy protection as debt soars

NII Holdings Inc, the parent of Nextel operators in Latin America, filed for U.S. bankruptcy protection on Monday after struggling for years with debt, fierce competition in Brazil and Mexico, and a dispute with a U.S. hedge fund. The company filed a voluntary petition for so-called Chapter 11 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York, according to a filing.

International consortium acquires Nextel Chile

(Telecompaper) An international consortium of Argentine, UK and US investors has acquired NII Holdings' Chilean subsidiary Nextel Chile. The value of the acquisition was not disclosed. The buyers include Argentine media company Grupo Veintitres, UK investment fund ISM Capital and US fund Optimum Advisors. Nextel Chile said that the investors will take immediate control of the company. Nextel Chile president Estanislao Pena was confirmed in his position by the new ownership. Nextel Chile has 60MHz of AWS spectrum and nearly 260,000 subscribers across the country.

(Telecompaper) Latin American mobile operator NII Holdings, working under the Nextel brand in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile, has retained UBS Investment Bank as its financial advisor to explore and advise the company on potential strategic opportunities. These opportunities include creating partnerships or alliances, selling or merging one or more of the company's business units or other strategic transactions involving the entire company. Nextel has also announced it has retained Rothschild as its financial advisor to explore and advise the company regarding opportunities for modifying its capital structure to improve its long-term liquidity position, including potential approaches that could lead to refinancing or restructuring all or a portion of its existing debt obligations.
