Permit levels could make good irrigation targets for farmers
2014-12-18 11:46:13| Waste Management - Topix.net
Those are the maximum amounts of irrigation water growers can apply 18 inches for cotton, corn, soybeans and grain sorghum and 36 inches for rice under the irrigation well permits granted them by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. "I remember asking last year how many acre inches we can apply to corn, cotton and soybeans, and none of us knew," says Jason Krutz, irrigation specialist with Mississippi State University and a speaker at the Mississippi Delta Irrigation Summit held at Stoneville, Miss., Dec. 10. "That number is 18, and rice is 36." Krutz said few producers have probably looked for that number and few cared until now even though the amounts are specified on the well permits.
China's largest coal power plant violating air pollution levels every week

Guardian: Chinas largest coal-fired power plant has been violating national emission standards for chemicals that cause dangerous fine particulate matter pollution, official figures show. The Waigaoqiao coal-fired power plant located in Shanghai has been violating Chinas national standards for nitrogen oxides every week since new standards came into force in July, according to analysis of publicly available government data by researchers at Greenpeace East Asia. The data shows that phase two of the...
As world leaders try to reduce emissions, carbon dioxide levels keep rising

Mashable: Diplomats just finished a marathon round of climate talks in Lima, Peru, which resulted in an agreement that for the first time ever will commit each country to taking action to reduce their emissions of global warming pollutants, such as carbon dioxide. The agreement leaves much still to be decided next year, with a looming deadline for a new climate treaty that will go into effect in 2020. What negotiators have been trying to do for much of the past two-plus decades is to address the accelerating...

Warmer seas could cause faster melting of Antarctic ice leading to rising sea levels, says study
2014-12-05 11:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Warming water under Antarcticas ice shelves risks ice melting that could lead to a worrying rise in global sea levels, research has shown. Loss of the Antarctic ice shelves, which extend from the southern polar land mass over the underwater continental shelf, are likely to result in the glaciers behind them flowing more rapidly into the sea. That would feed more melting ice into the oceans, pushing up sea levels. Total melting of the West Antarctic ice sheet, which is close to the regions...
