Myanmar Posts and Telecom in talks with 'foreign giant'
2013-09-17 01:57:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) is in talks with international telecommunications companies to help it expand as competition is set to start in the country. Earlier this year, Telenor and Ooredoo won mobile licences. Domestic companies MPT and Yatanarpon Teleport already have licences but MPT is currently the only operator with mobile infrastructure in Myanmar. "We are now discussing a joint venture agreement with a foreign giant," managing director U Aung Maw told The Myanmar Times. He said the company held talks with companies from France, Singapore, Japan, and other countries but declined to name the firms. However, Orange's senior vice president Dominique Espinasse confirmed that his company was in talks with the government about a partnership with MPT. Yatanarpon Teleport also expects to find a partner to help it with its planned mobile rollout, according to chief executive U Tin Win.
