Xiaomi lifts investment in 5G, AIoT to USD 7 bln

(Telecompaper) Xiaomi wants to put at least CNY 50 billion (USD 7.18 billion) over the next five years into 5G and AIoT to ensure its lead in the field, CEO Lei June said in his New Year's address to the company. The money is an increase from last year's investment goal of CNY 10 billion under the company's 'All in AIoT' plan. "This is to ensure we win this new smart era," Jun said.

Brookfield Infrastructure buys Cincinnati Bell for USD 2.6 bln

(Telecompaper) Brookfield Infrastructure has bought Cincinnati Bell for USD 2.6 billion, including debt. The deal has received unanimous approval from Cincinnati Bell's board of directors but still needs to clear other customary conditions, including company shareholder as well as regulatory approval. It should clear by the end of next year. CEO Leigh Fox said the will enable the company to push its value over the long-term and expand its fibre network and services in Hawaii, Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, and across the nation.

F5 buys fraud prevention specialist Shape Security for USD 1 bln

(Telecompaper) F5 Networks has agreed to acquire fraud prevention specialist Shape Security for USD 1 billion, subject to certain adjustments. Under the deal, F5 will buy all of the shares of privately held Shape and then incorporate the company's machine learning and AI-powered capabilities into its portfolio of application services. F5 noted that the transaction will accelerate its growth momentum and more than double its addressable market in security. F5 CEO Francois Locoh-Donou explained: the companies will together deliver end-to-end application protection and that their combined technologies will open up a "fast-growing USD 4 billion adjacent market."

Intel buys Israeli AI chip specialist Habana Labs for USD 2 bln

(Telecompaper) Intel has bought Israeli AI chip startup Habana Labs for USD 2 billion, following reports the sale would run to USD 1 billion. The startup, which develops programmable deep learning accelerators, will become part of Intel's artificial intelligence (AI) portfolio and push the company's efforts in the AI silicon market, which Intel expects will be worth over USD 25 billion by 2024.

Reliance Jio confirms deal to sell 130,000 towers to Brookfield for USD 3.7 bln

(Telecompaper) India's Reliance Industries has confirmed a deal to sell the towers network of its mobile unit Jio to Brookfield Infrastructure Partners. After a preliminary agreement in June, the companies announced a definitive contract for the acquisition of approximately 130,000 communication towers by Brookfield for USD 3.7 billion (INR 252.15 billion).
