Geoengineering the Earth's climate sends policy debate down a curious rabbit hole
2014-08-04 02:44:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Theres a bit in Alices Adventures in Wonderland where things get curiouser and curiouser as the heroine tries to reach a garden at the end of a rat-hole sized corridor that shes just way too big for. She drinks a potion and eats a cake with no real clue what the consequences might be. She grows to nine feet tall, shrinks to ten inches high and cries literal floods of frustrated tears. I spent a couple of days at a symposium in Sydney last week that looked at the moral and ethical issues...

Geoengineering could make climate changes impacts worse
2014-08-01 12:26:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Blue and Green: A professor from Washington University, Seattle, has warned that climate engineering, or geoengineering, could have unknown consequences in decades to come and has said there needs to be a debate on the ethical issues around the practice. Speaking to the Guardian, Professor Stephen Gardiner said that geoengineering was currently unviable because the ethical issues around it need to be tackled first. He also warned that using this method could make climate change worse for future generations...

Why Superfreakonomics' authors are wrong on geo-engineering
2014-05-31 06:17:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Many commentators have already pointed out dozens of misquotes, misrepresentations and mistakes in the 'Global Cooling' chapter of the new book SuperFreakonomics by Ste[ph/v]ens Levitt and Dubner (see Joe Romm (parts I, II, III, IV, Stoat, Deltoid, UCS and Paul Krugman for details. Michael Tobis has a good piece on the difference between adaptation and geo-engineering). Unfortunately, Amazon has now turned off the 'search inside' function for this book, but you can read the relevant chapter for yourself...

Give geoengineering a chance to fix climate change: David Keith
2014-03-29 03:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
CBC: As the term implies, geoengineering is engineering on a planetary scale. It involves attempting to arrest the course of climate change through mega-projects - by seeding the atmosphere with reflective particles, for example, or by putting gigantic mirrors in orbit around the Earth to reflect sunlight back to space, or by fertilizing the ocean with iron to stimulate the growth of carbon-absorbing plankton. Bob McDonald on IPCC Climate change report A case for climate engineering 'Planet hacking'...

Geo-engineering no Holy Grail - study
2014-02-25 11:22:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Agence France-Presse: Far from offering a simple fix, sci-fi solutions to global warming may in fact make the problem worse, a probe of "geo-engineering" options said on Tuesday. Once mocked as unscientific, geo-engineering proposals are gaining traction as carbon emissions soar, placing Earth on track for warming of maybe four degrees Celsius (7.2 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2100. Ideas, mainly experimental or untested, include building mirrors in space to reflect the Sun's rays or growing plankton to boost absorption...
