Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Our team and mission The Research Fellow will be based in the Lunar Lander Team of the HRE Development Projects Group. The Lunar Lander Team in the Directorate of Human Spaceflight and Robotic Exploration supports the initiation and leads the implementation of near to medium term lunar exploration mission studies, technology development and flight projects. Current activities include the development of PROSPECT and PILOT for the Russian led mission Luna27. These activities are defined to generate knowledge, technologies, expertise, capabilities and partnership to prepare for future human lunar exploration whilst creating new opportunities for fundamental scientific research. Fields of activitiesresearch Overview of the field of research proposed A Research Fellow is sought to engage in both independent and supporting research in preparation of future lunar exploration via the PROSPECT package on the Luna27 mission. Work topics include the investigation of specific problems related to the PROSPECT investigation in the areas of sample contamination, volatile loss and preservation, sensor calibration permittivity sensor, cameras and illumination unit, temperature sensors, and in particular the definition and optimization of PROSPECT operations concepts for maximizing the science output. Additional topics may include contributions to data processing, calibration and archiving of PROSPECT and PILOT data. The Research Fellow will work closely with the lunar lander team, to address important scientific questions that affect the PROSPECT design and performances. The candidate will also develop and refine PROSPECT operations concepts and related constraints based on inputs including review of test results regarding their impact on science performance and operations. This will involve working closely with the members of the PROSPECT User Group PROSPECT science team, members of the PROSPECT industrial consortium, and with colleagues in ESA including the PROSPECT project scientist, to perform multidisciplinary research in support of an optimized PROSPECT mission. The generation of technical notes in support of the PROSPECT development activities and of publications on performed scientific investigations is expected. The specific interests and proposed research of the Research Fellow will be taken into account and given priority where possible. The Research Fellow is also expected to create research and collaborative links as needed with other areas of HRE as well as ESAs Science Directorate and ESAs Technical Directorate in order to profit from existing expertise and for exploiting synergies within ESAs various activity areas. Experience in multidisciplinary analysis skills, instrument operations planning, instrument data processing calibration archiving, scientific collaboration, documentation and publication etc. will be considered an asset. Specificities The Research Fellow in the Lunar Lander Team is embedded in an ESA project team which is working under tight constraints to achieve the goal of delivering a fully functional and space qualified payload on time and in line with available budget to the Russian Luna27 project. This means that 1. The RFs work is performed in an international and highly interactive environment where ESA, industry, and academia collaborate under schedule constraints to achieve a common goal. For directly project related tasks, schedule constraints may apply to the RFs work. 2. Project activities are taking place in several locations in Europe, and occasionally in Russia. 3. The RF is expected to propose and conduct independent Research in support of PROSPECT related science topics. A time sharing of about 50 of time spent on independent research and 50 of time spent on directly project related activities is envisaged. 4. In general, no laboratory facilities are available in the Lunar Lander Team. On a case by case basis, when supported by the project needs, the use of some lab facility on the premises may be enabled by the PROSPECT project. Any lab facility access needed for the proposed research must be clearly specified in the research proposal. Right now, were working with AI, cubesat, drone and hyperspectral payload data and VR, but HAPs, quantum technologies and distributed ledgers are on our todo list. lab is part of the ESA Earth Observation Programmes Department developing future systems for earth observation. lab also hosts ESAs InCubed programme, providing rapid funding of innovative public private partnerships to exploit new EO markets. lab also convenes experts from across the World to develop research agendas on the relevance for EO of emerging technology topics including AI, distributed ledgers and quantum computing. lab tests concepts in 13 month Case Studies executed by a multidisciplinary research team that youd be a part of. Successful ideas are scaled up through partnerships with ESA staff, external researchers and university institutes, new space companies in every ESA member state, and disseminated through scientific publications and conferences and scale up projects. The lab research team will grow to 1520 staff in 2019, including this intake of research fellows and secondees from industry and visiting fellows. Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Description Within the Propulsion and Aerothermodynamics Divistion, the Flight Vehicles and Aerothermodynamics Engineering Section is responsible for flight vehicle engineering computational fluid dynamics ground testing and groundtoflight transposition methods for internal and external flows external and internal aerothermodynamics of relevance to propulsion systems ascent, cruise and reentry of space vehicles also through the Earths or planetary atmospheres plume analysis multi physics modelling fluidstructure interaction phenomena exploitation of flight data from flight experiments, specially involving aerothermodynamics and reentry. Fields of activitiesresearch Spacecraft Design for Demise or D4D is currently the solution proposed at system design level to ensure compliance to the risk requirement using uncontrolled Earth entry from space. To minimise the risk to the human population, a requirement is imposed on all reentry spacecraft for the risk of casualty to be below 104. Compliance with this requirement can be achieved by performing controlled deorbit, but the impact in terms of mass and cost can be high. An alternative is to ensure passive and safe reentry within a 25year timeframe using D4D techniques and technologies. The following programme of work is proposed Objective 1 Survey the current state of the art in the fields related to D4D applied in nonspace industrial processes e.g. buildings, transportation, manufacturing as well as in space missions. The related fields of research shall cover aerodynamics, thermodynamics, propulsion, structures and materials. The research will comprise a survey of the nonspace sector versus the design of space missions. Special attention shall be paid to activities already ongoing in the Directorate in the field of D4D, as well as to ESA mission needs. Objective 2 Based on ESA mission needs, investigate and assess new, efficient and costeffective methods for D4D by means of innovative materials, structures and aerodynamic shapes. This objective will take into account any new upcoming ESA missions where uncontrolled reentry may be required or imposed. This objective will also cover the investigation and benchmarking of the problems and solutions of demisability. Objective 3 Design, develop and run a series of simulations for ESA missions where demisability will be used to safely reenter a spacecraft, launch stage or dead satellite. The simulations will be developed using the Directorates existing tools and in a way so as to maximize efficiency and minimize running time. Objective 4 Propose a comprehensive plan to test, verify and validate the simulations developed using the ESTEC Testing Facilities and the ESTEC laboratories. Fields of activitiesresearch In the frame of calibrating hyperspectral instruments, the development of optical ground support equipment OGSE is very cost and time intensive. Generally speaking, a new and dedicated OGSE has to be designed and built from scratch for each instrument. This often leads to delayed and costly OGSEs which may end up not being an appropriate fit for the hyperspectral instrument needing to be calibrated.
