Geoengineering approaches to reduce climate change unlikely to succeed

ScienceDaily: Reducing the amount of sunlight reaching the planet's surface by geoengineering may not undo climate change after all. Two German researchers used a simple energy balance analysis to explain how Earth's water cycle responds differently to heating by sunlight than it does to warming due to a stronger atmospheric greenhouse effect. Further, they show that this difference implies that reflecting sunlight to reduce temperatures may have unwanted effects on Earth's rainfall patterns. The results are...

Climate change affects Northwest snowpack, study says

2013-12-05 10:52:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Spokesman-Review: Last weekends doozy of a storm followed a classic Northwest weather script. Winds gusting to 40 mph blew moisture-rich air from the ocean into the Cascades and Northern Rockies, dumping snow on the mountains while leaving lower elevations bare. The winds called winter westerlies are vital to a region that depends on mountain snowpack for its water supply. But a new study suggests that climate change is disrupting the winds, with stark implications for future water availability. Those...

Haveeru: The European Union on Tuesday approved a grant aid of EUR 4 million to help Maldives tackle issues related to climate change. The EU delegation to Sri Lanka and the Maldives said on Thursday that the funds would replicate ongoing projects, but with a focus on Addu and Fuvahmulah. It would also help build capacity of the local government and communities, the delegation said. "The implementation of this project signifies both the EU's and Maldives commitment towards improving climate resilience...

US National Research Council wants abrupt climate change warning system

2013-12-05 03:51:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Ars Technica: Yesterday, the National Research Council (a branch of the US' National Academies of Science) released a report in which it called for the creation of an early warning system that would let us know when we're approaching tipping points in the climate. While talk of climate tipping points is fairly common, most of it focuses on the climate itself changing to a new state. The new report is quite different, in that it's focused on things that can enter new states even when the climate is only changing...

Climate change inaction betrays the next generation, scientists warn

2013-12-04 14:41:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

PhysOrg: Most of the Earth's remaining fossil fuels must be left in the ground to avoid disastrous consequences for today's young people and for future generations, according to research published today. The research is co-authored by 18 scientists from around the world, including University of Queensland Global Change Institute Director Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg. The research was led by former NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies Director Dr James Hansen, and is published in the Plos One journal....
