Did Microchip Technology get ahead of itself last week by suggesting that its downward revenue forecast was a negative bellwether for the whole semiconductor market? Or is there a macro-economic weakness, foreshadowed by Microchip, that bodes ill for the chip industry? Some in the industry are now describing signs of decline in the current quarter as "seasonal." Others are calling it "a cycle" but not a correction.

Las Vegas sounds false alarm as global Ebola fears spread

A commercial plane was briefly quarantined on a Las Vegas airport tarmac on Friday, sending airline shares down as worldwide fears increased that Ebola could spread outside West Africa, where it has killed more than 4,000 people. Airline and hospital officials said a Delta Air Lines plane was held at McCarran International Airport, but it turned out to be a false alarm and an all-clear was issued.

New York's attorney general has settled a false advertising investigation at Wal-Mart, saying stores were charging a nonexistent "sugar tax" on soda. The attorney general's office says the retail chain launched a national sale in June advertising Coca-Cola 12-packs for $3, but consumers at 117 Wal-Mart stores in New York were routinely charged $3.50.
