Canadian province to double carbon tax

2015-06-27 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Hill: The newly-elected liberal government of Alberta, Canada, announced Thursday that it will double the provinces carbon tax by 2017. Regulators will also ask big industrial facilities to cut their emissions intensity by 12 percent next year and up to 20 percent by 2017, the Calgary Herald reported on Thursday. The move is designed to encourage oil sands operators and power plants to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. If Alberta wants better access to world markets, then were going to need...

Fuels from Canadian Oil Sands Have Larger Carbon Footprint, Analysis Finds

2015-06-26 19:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Yale Environment 360: Gasoline and diesel refined from Canadian oil sands have a significantly larger carbon footprint and climate impact than fuels from conventional crude sources, according to an analysis by the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory. Oil sands-derived fuels will release on average 20 percent more carbon into the atmosphere over their lifetime and possibly up to 24 percent more depending on how they are extracted and refined, the study says. Methane emissions from tailing ponds...

Alberta to boost carbon price ahead of climate policy revamp

2015-06-26 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Bloomberg: Alberta will increase its carbon price for industrial emitters, the first step in revamping climate regulations to curb greenhouse-gas output from coal plants and oil-sands production. The price will rise to C$20 ($16) a metric ton next year, from C$15 now, and will increase to C$30 in 2017, when the rules will expire, the environment ministry said in a statement Thursday. The government will also begin a climate-policy review led by University of Alberta Professor Andrew Leach to prepare recommendations...

ALMA Detects First Traces Of Carbon 'Smog' Permeating Interstellar Atmospheres Of Early Galaxies

2015-06-26 07:54:56| rfglobalnet News Articles

Astronomers study the elements scattered between the stars to learn about the internal workings of galaxies, their motion and chemistry. To date, however, attempts to detect the telltale radio signature of carbon in the very early Universe have been thwarted, perhaps – as some have speculated – by the need to allow a few billion years more for stars to manufacture sufficient quantities to be observed across such vast cosmic distances.

Resource Responsibility and the Global Carbon Crisis

2015-06-24 16:12:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Blue and Green: Although it doesnt feel so long ago, it has been two years since I wrote about the mounting risk of investing in fossil fuels; in short, great portions of the reserves we are currently spending billions per year to discover and explore will have to remain unburnt if we are to avoid more than 2C of global temperature rise, leaving eye-wateringly valuable assets stranded under the ground and potentially creating a global financial crash far more serious than the one from which we are just starting...
