Carbon Taxs Costs on Economy Seen Exceeding Revenue Gain
2013-02-26 11:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Bloomberg: A tax on carbon emissions would curtail U.S. consumption, investment and wages, limiting the ability of the levy to add revenue for the federal government, according to the National Association of Manufacturers. The group in a report assumed a $20 a ton charge on carbon dioxide starting this year and then calculated costs with a rate of almost $1,000 a ton by 2053, and another with the rate relatively stable. The higher tax rate is needed to achieve U.S. goals of cutting greenhouse-gas emissions...

EU lawmakers back suspension of airline carbon payments
2013-02-26 07:53:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: European Union lawmakers on Tuesday backed a Commission plan to suspend for a year a law that would make all airlines using EU airports pay for their carbon emissions, and urged U.S. President Barack Obama to accelerate a global deal. International fury at the EU law led Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard last year to propose a temporary exemption for intercontinental flights. The European Parliament's Environment Committee on Tuesday voted in favour of her proposal, dubbed "Stop the Clock"....

Canada: Alberta cancels funding for carbon capture project
2013-02-25 20:03:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Globe and Mail: For the second time in less than a year a key carbon capture and storage project in Alberta has been hit with a major setback, denting the province's efforts to combat carbon emissions. The Alberta government cancelled its $285-million funding of the CCS project associated with the proposed Swan Hills Synfuels LP synthetic gas plant north of Edmonton. The plant, which is to turn underground coal into synthetic natural gas, was supposed to include a government-supported carbon capture component...

United Kingdom: Wind farms will create more carbon dioxide, say scientists
2013-02-24 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Telegraph: The finding, which threatens the entire rationale of the onshore wind farm industry, will be made by Scottish government-funded researchers who devised the standard method used by developers to calculate "carbon payback time' for wind farms on peat soils. Wind farms are typically built on upland sites, where peat soil is common. In Scotland alone, two thirds of all planned onshore wind development is on peatland. England and Wales also have large numbers of current or proposed peatland wind farms....
