Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and United Parcel Service Inc. jumped more than 3.2 percent as shoppers go to stores and online for the Black Friday weekend.

Shares are off to a disappointing start, falling despite Wall Street setting new records as gains in miners and energy stocks are offset by more falls in Woolworths and Wesfarmers. The market hates surprises, and Cardno's disclosure that December half earnings would fall year on year certainly isn't a surprise , given the pain the mine services end of the market has been going through for the past 18 months or so.

ExxonMobil Corp. profits rose 3 per cent in the third quarter as strong refining performance offset lower revenues from falling oil prices and production. The company said Friday it earned $8.07 billion on revenue of $107.49 billion in the third quarter.
