According to the report, Beijings air pollution went off the charts. The pollution was about 40 times more than the limit set by the World Health Organization. Toxic air pollution covers much of northern China

BBC: China's media has urged the government to be more open about pollution levels after many northern cities registered dangerous levels of pollution in recent days. In the capital Beijing at the weekend, air pollution soared past levels considered hazardous by the World Health Organisation. The smog - attributed to coal-fired power plants and factories in provinces surrounding Beijing - is expected to shift when winds pick up later this week. Celia Hatton reports.

Chinese air pollution hits record levels in pictures

Guardian: On Saturday, Beijing experienced its worst pollution reading since the air quality monitor on was installed in the US embassy in 2008. Until this year, Chinese authorities have underplayed the country's spells of noxious atmospheric pollution. This weekend, however, Beijing's local government issued an alert, warning vulnerable people to stay indoors. The wave of pollution peaked on Saturday and by Monday remained hazardous.
