United Kingdom: Fracking won't crack our dependence on Russian gas imports

2014-03-25 12:34:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: As tensions with Russia intensify, government ministers and conservative commentators have increasingly sought to capitalise on the crisis to sell fracking to the electorate. Over the weekend, Conservative energy minister Michael Fallon argued that the UK should reduce its reliance on gas imports by fracking for shale gas in the UK. The foreign minister, William Hague, wrote in the Telegraph that we need to "develop indigenous European energy supplies such as shale gas", while commentators including...

United Kingdom: Oil well safety warning for fracking

2014-03-25 03:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: Plans to expand shale gas "fracking" in the UK must learn from leaks and poor monitoring at existing onshore oil and gas sites, scientists say. A review of 2,152 wells drilled from 1902-2013 found up to 100 "orphaned" wells for which no firm is responsible. Only two cases of well "failure" were recorded, but legacy sites are not monitored for leaks, the authors note. The study led by ReFINE (Researching Fracking in Europe) is published in the journal Marine and Petroleum Geology. It is...

NSA Lifts Middle Finger to Middle Kingdom

2014-03-24 17:31:48| TechNewsWorld

Oh, there have been some good National Security Agency revelations. Like the one about the NSA tapping German Chancellor Angela Merkel's phone. Or the one about the NSA planting agents inside World of Warcraft, or impersonating Facebook in a global quest to spread malware. Delicious as all those stories are, however, last weekend's NSA bombshell may take the cake.

United Kingdom: Governments fracking focus threatens renewables investment, experts say

2014-03-24 13:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Blue and Green: By promoting shale gas development, the UK could see itself start to lag behind on low-carbon technology, putting investment and innovation at risk, according to analysis from the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM). While CIWEM recognises that fracking can help the UK improve its energy security and eventually reduce energy costs in the short-term, it warns that focusing on shale gas might have long-term negative effects. The announcement comes as energy minister...

United Kingdom: Rain could increase river pollution

2014-03-24 07:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: Wetter winters in the future could increase agricultural pollution in Britain's rivers, say scientists. A research team from Lancaster University concluded that increased, more intensive winter rainfall is likely to wash more fertiliser out of soil and into rivers. This could artificially nourish plants, including toxic algae. The research team is now embarking on a project to help predict and ultimately mitigate agricultural pollution. Its study aims to work out how the changing climate and...
