Virginia environmental officials are proposing a $361,000 fine against CSX Transportation for an April 2014 train derailment that dumped nearly 30,000 gallons of Bakken crude oil into the James River in Lynchburg. The state Department of Environmental Quality announced the proposed consent order with the rail company on Monday.

Canadian National Railway Co is still cleaning up spilled oil and removing damaged rail cars after a weekend derailment on its line at a remote site about 80 kilometers south of Timmins, Ontario. Patrick Waldron, a spokesman for the country's largest railway, said in an email that crews, working in -31C weather, are allowing a controlled fire at the site to continue to burn.

CSX offers apology for derailment with fire still burning

A spokesperson for CSX was offering an apology as a fire continued to burn Tuesday at the site of the Monday CSX train derailment in Fayette County that destroyed one home and forced 1,000 people to evacuate. "I would like to apologize for the significant disruption in the lives of a lot of people in those communities there and let me pledge that we're working to get everything back in order as quickly as we can," said Gary Sease, spokesperson for CSX Corporation, on Tuesday's MetroNews "Talkline."
