Cameroon signs loan for Central Africa Backbone, Phase 2

(Telecompaper) The government of Cameroon has signed an agreement to borrow XAF 24.2 billion (USD 26.55 mln) from the African Development Bank to build the second phase of the Central Africa Backbone. The country's responsibility for the second phase consists in deploying 914 km of additional fibre between Cameroon and neighbouring Nigeria, Congo and Central African Republic. Agence Ecofin reports that another XAF 1 billion will come from the Global Environment Facility and some XAF 7 billion from the Cameroonian government itself. Work on the four-year CAB 2 project will begin in 2016, according to ICT and postal minister Minette Libom Li Likeng. The first phase is due to be completed in the first quarter of next year.
