Safaricom considers buying stake in Ethio Telecom but may start own business from scratch

(Telecompaper) Kenyan operator Safaricom is considering buying a stake in Ethiopia's state-owned Ethio Telecom, which has announced the sale of shares through privatisation, reports Business Daily. Safaricom's interim CEO Michael Joseph said that the telecom operator is also considering setting up shop in Ethiopia from scratch. His comments came after Ethiopian authorities began searching for an adviser on the sale of a stake in its national operator, opening up the country's telecoms market to foreign investment for the first time.

Safaricom to launch Bonga social media platform

(Telecompaper) Kenyan operator Safaricom is piloting a social messaging app that will link to its mobile money platform in an attempt to move the company into the application business, reports Business Daily. Bonga, which means "chat" in Kiswahili, will be integrated with M-Pesa to allow its almost 28 million users to communicate beyond sending money to one another. Bonga is the first product launched by the company's innovation incubator Alpha.

Telkom Kenya eyes merger with Airtel to rival Safaricom - report

(Telecompaper) Telkom and Airtel Kenya plan to merge operations as a first step to acquiring all of Airtel's assets, creating a stronger challenger to market leader Safaricom, Reuters reported, citing unnamed sources. A source at the communication authority said the two firms have been engaging officials over the plan to share outlets and infrastructure, such as transmission assets, before Telkom acquires Airtel Kenya at an unspecified time. According to the source, the two operators are yet to make a formal application to the regulator disclosing all the details.

Kenya prosecutor orders criminal probe of 6 Safaricom staff over possible election fraud

(Telecompaper) The Kenyan chief prosecutor has ordered a criminal investigation of six employees of mobile operator Safaricom for allegedly conspiring with election board officials to rig the 08 August presidential poll. Safaricom has dismissed the accusations as "reckless, callous and unnecessary" and warned that the allegations could endanger the lives of its members of staff and families. A letter from public prosecutions director Keriako Tobiko says a team of senior prosecutors will assist in investigating six staff members named by opposition politicians under the National Super Alliance (Nasa) for possible meddling with the election results, which were later nullified.
