N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory signed legislation today authorizing utilities in 32 eastern North Carolina cities and towns to sell their shares in four coal and nuclear plants to Duke Energy Progress for $1.2 billion. The sale will reduce the debt carried by the municipal utilities in the N.C. Eastern Municipal Power Authority and allow them to offer more competitive electricity rates.
