Intel developing STB with camera, VoD service

(Telecompaper) Intel has formed a subsidiary called Intel Media to develop an STB and VoD service it will sell directly to consumers, reports the Wall Street Journal. Project director Erik Huggers announced at a conference hosted by All Things D that the device under development will feature a camera to allow more comfortable family videoconferencing on the TV and enable viewers to comment on programmes they are watching. Combined with facial recognition technology, it could allow parents to prevent children from watching adult TV shows, he said. The TV service Intel envisages will carry live and on-demand programming. Negotiations are underway content companies. The company is also working on a user interface to make it easier to find shows that with existing programme guides. Huggers added that Intel's pay TV service will not be cheaper than cable, but will offer a better experience.
